In order to become a United States citizen, people are required to go through a process called naturalization. The naturalization process begins with a Petition for Naturalization, a document that every potential citizen must complete with information including birthdate, occupation, names of spouse and children, and means of entry to the United States. Every state manages its own naturalization records. Some information on North Carolina’s records can be found here and the federal government, here. The petitions below are of Lebanese/Syrian immigrants in the early 20th century. You’ll notice familiar surnames, towns and cities in North Carolina and Lebanon.
